From Struggle to Stability: How ADS SR through ACK Mogor Compassion International Assisted Project Transformed Enock’s Family!

Enock Kiplangat, the 7th born in a family of ten children, was only 5 years when his family’s dire living situation came to light. His home, a small, cramped hut in Mogor community, Transmara East Sub-County, Narok County, could barely accommodate the large family. The single hut served as a living room, kitchen, and bedroom for Enock's parents and younger siblings. The older siblings were forced to seek shelter from neighbors, a risky practice, particularly for the teenage girls who were vulnerable to sexual abuse as they wandered at night. "We depend mostly on menial jobs to provide for the family," Enock’s father shared, his voice heavy with resignation. "These jobs are scarce, and when we do find them, we earn just KES 200 to 250. It’s impossible to save enough to build another hut for the girls or boys."

It’s impossible to save enough to build another hut for the girls or boys."

This harsh reality persisted until 2019, when Anglican Development Services South Rift (ADS SR), with funding from Compassion International Kenya, launched a Child and Youth Development Project in their community. During home visits, Enock’s family was identified as one in critical need of intervention. A thorough assessment revealed that adequate housing was an urgent necessity. The family was enrolled in the Mogor Compassion Assisted Project, which set the wheels of change in motion. The first priority: a decent home. “The project built the house shell, and installed the roof, doors, and windows,” Enock’s mother recounted with gratitude. “We were responsible for completing the walls and the floors, which made us feel like we truly owned it.” Once completed, the new home immediately improved their living conditions. The girls no longer have to roam the neighborhood at night in search of a place to sleep—they now have the kitchen to use as their bedroom, safe and secure. The two houses on the property were spacious enough to accommodate the entire family. In addition, the household began to harvest rainwater, easing the burden of fetching water for domestic use.

But the help didn’t stop with housing. The family received comprehensive support from the project. They received financial literacy training, guidance on health and WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene), and even started a kitchen garden. As part of a farming initiative, they were given maize seeds as a start-up kit. “The project also gave us 20 tree seedlings to plant around our home,” Enock’s mother said proudly. “Enock is doing well in school now, and the project takes care of his school fees. He gets regular health screenings and receives treatment whenever needed.”

With tears of joy in her eyes, she added, “Today, my family is happy. I’m so thankful to ADS SR and Compassion International for the support we’ve received. It has changed our lives in more ways than I can express.”

Thanks to the interventions of ADS SR and Compassion International, Enock’s family has moved from a place of desperation to a newfound stability. Their story is one of hope, resilience, and the power of community action.
