With its breathtaking savannahs, rolling hills, and proximity to the world-famous Maasai Mara, Erupata is a land of natural beauty and deep cultural heritage. Nestled in the heart of Narok County, Kenya, Erupata is a thriving Maasai community where tradition and resilience blend seamlessly with innovation. With its breathtaking savannahs, rolling hills, and proximity to the world-famous Maasai Mara, Erupata is a land of natural beauty and deep cultural heritage. For generations, the community has relied on livestock keeping, beadwork, and eco-tourism, but a transformative shift is now taking place, one that is redefining livelihoods and improving child well-being.

As we step through the gates of ACK Erupata Compassion Offices, we are met with the joyful laughter of schoolchildren playing—a scene that embodies the hope and promise of this community.

It is here that the Smart Village Model was conceived and brought to life at the beginning of 2024 through a powerful partnership between ADS SR, Compassion International, and World Serve International.

In October 2024, the Erupata CDC project had launched the model, ensuring every household had access to clean water, functional toilets, kitchen gardens, tree planting initiatives, and modern cooking stoves.

During the launch, excitement and anticipation filled the air as families embraced this bold new vision. A tour of the community today reveals a remarkable transformation. Households that once traveled long distances to purchase vegetables now harvest their own fresh produce right at their doorstep.

The caregivers proudly show off their assorted vegetables of kale, spinach, maize, black nightshade (managu), onions, sweet potatoes, and cabbage, among others. At the demonstration farm, flourishing crops testify to the success of the initiative, showcasing kale and spinach. Visiting individual caregivers’ gardens, we witness inspiring stories of resilience and creativity.

Nalangu, a caregiver, proudly showcases her diverse vegetable garden while sharing her plans to construct a chicken house to supplement the family’s diet and income. Nalangu said, “I am so proud of my thriving vegetable garden! I plan to build a chicken house soon to improve my family’s diet and earn some extra income.”

Kijooluu proudly shows off her garden which has assorted vegetables including maize, highlighting the potential of small-scale farming. Kijooluu shared, “I have successfully grown sweet potatoes and onions and other vegetables. Small-scale farming is making a difference in my household’s food supply.”

Kisaru expresses her frustration over goats destroying her crops due to poor fencing, but her determination remains unwavering. Kisaru explained, The vegetables were doing so well, we had enough for the household. I had not bought vegetables from the market in a very long time but now the goats destroyed the vegetable. But despite this happening, I will not stop planting because I have seen and experienced the benefits”.

The impact on the children’s well-being is profound. With kitchen gardens flourishing, families now provide nutritious meals at home, reducing malnutrition and improving overall health. Children who once lacked access to essential vitamins and minerals now enjoy a balanced diet, boosting their energy and cognitive development. Additionally, the availability of clean water and modern cooking stoves has improved hygiene and reduced exposure to harmful smoke, creating a safer environment for families.

Tree planting has also become a cornerstone of the Smart Village Model, with caregivers nurturing seedlings that will soon provide shade, and environmental protection. The demonstration farm boasts a variety of tree seedlings, with the blue gum tree proving to be the best in germination.

Challenges remain—salty borehole water affected the tree nursery and seedlings, and inadequate fencing has led to crop destruction—but the community remains determined and hopeful. The transformation witnessed in Erupata is nothing short of historic. Ven. Naikumi, the project’s patron, beams with joy as he proclaims*, “For the first time in history, Erupata has homegrown vegetables!”*

ADS SR extends heartfelt gratitude to World Serve International for their life-changing borehole drilling initiative and to Compassion International for their unwavering support. Through this Smart Village vision, Erupata is not only fighting poverty but ensuring that every child grows up healthy, well-nourished, and full of hope for a brighter future.
