“Harvesting Hope, Sustainable Solutions for Lasting Food Security"
Scaling up Sustainable Food Security and Livelihoods among the communities of Bomet County

Sustainable food security is paramount for the well-being and development of a community, ensuring that all members have consistent access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs and preferences for an active and healthy life. It not only addresses immediate hunger and malnutrition but also promotes long-term health, economic stability, and social equity. By emphasizing sustainable agricultural practices, the community can protect and enhance natural resources, adapt to climate change, and support local economies, thereby creating a resilient food system that benefits present and future generations.
This week, 35 farmers who are also beneficiaries in our Bomet Child Centered Community Development Program (Bomet CCCD) funded by Help A Child Africa got an opportunity to participate in a Leaning Visit to Kitale to learn, gain skills and knowledge on farm planning, organic farming, inter cropping, minimum tillage, kitchen gardening, biological pest controls and cover cropping.
They visited several centers of excellence in farming techniques namely:
• Organic 4 Orphans – A center that trains youths and orphans on organic manure preparation and use
• Amagoro Field Farmers School – They were able to see various demo gardens of vegetables
• Bishop Muge Mission Centre – Here they learnt about Horticulture farming of cabbage, indigenous vegetables and bananas. Avocado and dairy farming activities
• 1 FFS Youth farmer – They also got an opportunity to visit a youth farmer affiliated to Amagoro Field Farmers School. He has implemented the knowledge and skills acquired at the school in his piece of land
The agricultural learning visit will yield several valuable outcomes, including enhanced practical knowledge, exposure to innovative farming techniques, and networking opportunities with industry experts. The farmers observed best practices in sustainable agriculture, understood the application of advanced technologies, and gained insights into effective resource management. This visit has inspired new ideas for improving crop yields and farm efficiency, ultimately leading to better productivity and profitability. Additionally, the exchange of experiences and challenges with fellow farmers will encourage a collaborative approach to problem-solving and continuous improvement in agricultural practices.
