Restoring Dignity Among the Teen Mothers in Narok County.

In the vast Narok County, where tradition often runs deep and challenges like teenage pregnancy persist above the national average, a quiet revolution is taking place. At the heart of this transformation are the determined young mothers—some as young as sixteen—who are rewriting their stories, one session at a time.

In the vast Narok County, where tradition often runs deep and challenges like teenage pregnancy persist above the national average, a quiet revolution is taking place. At the heart of this transformation are the determined young mothers—some as young as sixteen—who are rewriting their stories, one session at a time.

Through the tireless efforts of ADS SR, with unwavering support from We World Foundation, 187 teenage mothers recently gathered across nine remote villages of JS Naeku, Kisiriri, Olorroito, Naisoya, Olokuseroi, Nchura Eshumata, Murua, Sintakara and Nturumeti for a series of life-changing motivation and health sessions. These were not just meetings—they were safe spaces where young women shared their stories, found strength in each other, and learned how to reclaim their futures.

Each session began with warm introductions, where the girls—aged between 14 and 20—spoke of interrupted dreams, early motherhood, and the societal pressures they faced. Yet amid the pain were glimmers of resilience: stories of young mothers like the 16-year-old girl who had given birth but had already returned to school, determined to carve out a better life.

The sessions were rich in content, Young mothers were sensitized on essential reproductive health practices—from the importance of early antenatal care and cervical cancer screening to understanding the risk of sexually transmitted infections, including HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis B. For many, it was the first time hearing about the Human Papilloma virus (HPV) and the critical steps they could take to protect their health.

Empowerment extended beyond health. The girls were introduced to various contraceptive methods, including postpartum and post-abortion options, emphasizing the importance of healthy timing and spacing of pregnancies. The concept of dual protection was highlighted, offering not just choice but control.

But these sessions were not just about information. They were about transformation. The triple threat facing adolescent girls in Kenya—new HIV infections, gender-based violence (GBV), and teenage pregnancy—was laid bare. And the young mothers were not left alone to face it. They were guided on how to navigate these risks with knowledge, confidence, and courage.

Education was a cornerstone of the discussions. The young mothers learned about Kenya’s re-entry policy, which legally allows them to return to school after giving birth. For many, this was a revelation, sparking hope and ambition in those who had once believed their dreams had ended in the delivery room. Yet, challenges remained. Some teen mothers faced resistance at home, with unsupportive husbands barring them from returning to class. Still, the seeds of possibility had been planted.

ADS SR’s interventions didn’t stop in the classroom. Understanding that not all girls could return to school, there were calls for life skills training and economic empowerment—ensuring no mother is left behind, regardless of her path.

There were moments of joy too—snacks, transport reimbursement, and thoughtful packages where each teen mother received a bag, sanitary pads, bathing soap, and a “lesso” engraved with the words “Tudumishe Elimu Na Afya (T.E.N.A.). This made the young mothers feel seen and valued. Their enthusiastic turnout and active participation were a testament to the deep hunger for knowledge, connection, and support.

Yet, this is only the beginning. The journey to restore dignity, health, and opportunity among Narok’s teen mothers is ongoing. With sustained support, consistent follow-ups, and targeted life skills training, ADS SR through We World Foundation is lighting the way forward—one empowered girl at a time.

In a place once defined by silence and stigma, voices are rising. Stories are changing. And hope is being born again.
