Championing Children's Rights during the 2026 International Day of the African Child Celebrations
2026 Theme: “Ensuring Universal Access to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene for every Child in Africa”!

Children’s voices echoed with hope, talent, and determination as communities across Narok and Bomet Counties came together to commemorate the 2026 International Day of the African Child (DAC), a day dedicated to celebrating the resilience, rights, and potential of every African child.

Observed annually on 16th June, the International Day of the African Child traces its origins to the Soweto Uprising, when thousands of school children courageously protested against inequalities in education. The tragic loss of many young lives during the uprising inspired the African Union to establish this day in remembrance of their sacrifice while renewing Africa’s commitment to protecting and promoting children’s rights.

As part of its unwavering commitment to child protection and development, ADS South Rift proudly partnered with Narok & Bomet County Governments and development partners to support the successful organization and participation of children in this year’s celebrations. Through financial contributions towards planning and by facilitating project children and beneficiaries to actively participate, ADSSouth Rift ensured that children were not only present but were at the heart of the celebrations.

In Narok County, the three Compassion-assisted projects, Masurura, Olopi, and Mogor, jointly supported and participated in the County celebrations held at Maranatha Child Development Centre, Angata Barikoi in Transmara South. Meanwhile, the Compassion Erupata and WeWorld projects joined hands to support celebrations hosted at Enkare Nairowua Girls Secondary School, Maji Moto in Narok South, bringing together children, parents, community leaders, and stakeholders to celebrate children’s achievements while amplifying the call to safeguard their rights.

In Bomet County, the Help a Child Community-Centered Child Development (CCCD) project proudly hosted the county-level celebrations in Ndanai, creating a vibrant platform where children showcased their talents, engaged in advocacy, and interacted with duty bearers committed to improving their wellbeing. The event was also featured in a local radio station’s news broadcast.

The celebrations also demonstrated ADS South Rift’s commitment to gender mainstreaming and social inclusion. Children and persons with disabilities actively participated alongside their peers, reaffirming the organization’s belief that every child deserves equal opportunities to learn, participate, and thrive regardless of gender, ability, or background. This inclusive approach reflects ADS South Rift’s broader commitment to leaving no one behind in its programming.

ADS South Rift sincerely appreciates the continued collaboration with the various departments of the County Governments, particularly the Departments of Gender and Social Services, whose leadership and coordination were instrumental in the successful planning and implementation of the celebrations.

The organization also extends heartfelt gratitude to its valued development partners and donors, including Compassion International, WeWorld, and Help a Child, whose unwavering support continues to create opportunities for children to grow, learn, and realize their full potential.

Together, we celebrate every child today while strengthening our collective commitment to building a future where every child is protected, empowered, included, and given every opportunity to thrive.
