6th August 2025! joy and pride filled the air at the ACK Diocese of Kericho as 27 farmers celebrated a remarkable milestone — their graduation from the Farmers Field School (FFS), a two-year intensive agricultural training program implemented by ADS South Rift.

The vibrant ceremony, graced by The Rt. Rev. Bishop Ernest Ngeno, brought together church leaders, agricultural experts, government representatives, and community members. Among the distinguished guests were ADS South Rift Board Members, Dr. Millicent, a lecturer and agronomist from the University of Kabianga and Canon Obiero, the Diocesan Treasurer. Other guests were Mr. Koech, Manager of Neema Talents Sacco, and the area chief, all of whom applauded the farmers for their commitment and resilience.

Over the past two years, the 27 graduates have undergone rigorous training under the Farmers Field School Curriculum, which combines classroom learning with hands-on field experience. In the first year, farmers focused on crop production, mastering techniques in soil health, pest management, and climate-smart agriculture. The second year shifted to animal production, where they gained practical skills in livestock management, breeding, and feed formulation.

The evaluation process was thorough, with 50% of the assessment based on farm visits to measure real-life application of skills, and another 50% on written examinations testing theoretical understanding. Only those who demonstrated excellence in both areas earned the coveted FFS graduation certificates.

Speaking during the event, Bishop Ngeno commended the farmers for their dedication, emphasizing that the FFS initiative is a vital tool in transforming livelihoods and promoting sustainable agriculture. “These farmers are now ambassadors of change — equipped not only with knowledge but with the confidence to apply and share what they have learned in their communities,” he said.

The success of the FFS project is a testament to the long-standing partnership between the Diocese of Kericho and Trinity Cheltenham of the United Kingdom. For years, Trinity Cheltenham has generously supported the initiative, enabling hundreds of local farmers to acquire practical skills that have improved household incomes, enhanced food security, and promoted self-reliance.

According to guests’ speaking, the program’s impact goes beyond the farms. “We have seen significant improvement in productivity and resource management. Farmers are now adopting modern practices, diversifying income sources, and influencing their peers to do the same,” she noted.

As the newly graduated farmers received their certificates, their faces reflected pride and hope — hope for a future where farming is not just a way of life but a sustainable business venture.

The day ended with a resounding message: empowered farmers build resilient communities. Through continued partnership between ADS South Rift, the Diocese of Kericho, and Trinity Cheltenham, the vision of transforming rural livelihoods through knowledge and practice continues to take root.
